“Six Feet Apart”
Oil 9×12″

Currently in literal terms, this is the kind of mask that has center stage right now. When the pandemic began I hadn’t painted for quite a while. But through expressive writing & exploring emotions I decided to do a series of paintings documenting the unfamiliar territory of the covid-19 virus. “Six Feet Apart” is one of my paintings in the series. For a reference I used a photo of myself. It’s a strange painting for a bizarre historic time in our collective history. The pensive bareskinned women is the ‘every-person.’ Her vulnerability continues with a paper thin mask & pure snowy hair of innocence in this situation. The tattoo is a rose of hope & happiness for the best possible outcome.

The pandemic situation makes me wonder if it’s making us take off metaphorical masks we might wear to become more of our real selves with new & healing ways of living… As it’s done for me with returning to painting again.

When I saw this man playing on the street so he could make some money, I saw the expression on his face. He was in his own world and not only enjoying his music, but passionate about sharing it with others. I have found music to be a wonderful pain reliever that can stir something in your soul that takes attention away from pain. When I am painting, I’m in an alternate state, totally focused on the subject, rather that on myself or what might be ailing me.

I keep coming back to this idea that there are two sides to every coin. In this time of global pandemic, masks hold a duality of both safety and fear.

I’m now used to wearing a mask when out in public, but the metaphor is not lost upon me. Wearing a mask can feel securing in a strange way, providing protection from outside forces, while also giving me permission to move through the world with anonymity. I don’t have to share myself with others, which means I can protect my vulnerability when I feel like a mess.

Existing at the exact same time, beneath the mask, lies my fear. Fear of the unknown future, fear for my best friend in New York who’s on the front lines, fear that this will never end, fear of not being seen, and ultimately at the essence of it all…. the fear of being alone with myself.

There are many variables in the air for a lot of us. Stable anchors we once held on to have now been uprooted. Sensitivity can be a gift, but when it’s difficult adjusting to the new reality we all share, it can be emotionally flooding.

This collage represents me – UNMASKED.

Mosaico Fiorentino

Fragments like colored glass

Segmented memories

Names of streets
Distant ricordi

In a flash
my thoughts translate into Florentine tongue

Connecting chards of glass
like dots on a page
my memory comes into focus

An old mosaic completes itself
Myself

As I stay with the names
new memories insist on arriving

Your dome peeks through your ancient strade

Like the chords of Bob Dylan played as a fourteen year old
comes from distant vie in my brain
Dots connect
and Don’t Think Twice surfaces
